Sewing Closeness

Written by Kelsey Kricheldorf

Neighbours sharing a meal, parents comforting their children, friends laughing together; I focus on the feelings created by those deeper interactions as I build my business.

Inspired by my childhood in the close-knit Tow Hill Road Community and shaped by the influences of the COVID-19 pandemic, my goal as the owner of this small sewing business is to help make your home a comfortable place to be. Soft colours, simple designs, and a focus on natural fabrics all come together to create a sense of peace and tranquility.

I find so many products these days rely on bold colours or unique shapes to try to catch our attention. It leaves me feeling overwhelmed and overstimulated so I wanted to offer something more gentle with my business.

In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the majority of us indoors, I found sewing helped me enjoy my time at home and feel useful. Like many others, I lost my job during the pandemic but luckily, it came with a silver lining. Rather than feeling stressed or trapped by the pandemic, I saw an improvement in my mood.

I felt so much better without the pressures of frequent social gatherings! At first I felt guilty about it; with so many people suffering I didn't feel it was fair or normal that I was enjoying it so much. But after learning that the previous years spent feeling burnt out were due to the many social expectations of my job and life, it made a lot more sense.

Needing a new source of income and wanting to share my new-found sense of calm in whatever way I could, I decided to lean into my strengths and start a sewing business. I began by sewing face masks for friends, family and the essential workers in my community that were still in the workplace.

Eventually, that grew into the small business I called Ravenwing Crafts.

Frequent social events are difficult for me but I still appreciate the closer connections between people.

I hope to create pieces that are perfect for just those types of moments. In my home studio you'll find linen napkins and coasters for when you share a meal with loved ones, hemp tea towels for when the dishes need many hands to make light work, and cotton gift wraps for a friend's wedding, a neighbour's housewarming, Christmas morning or an anniversary.

With Ravenwing Crafts, I hope to share the comfort I felt when I stepped back from my busy life and embraced a more meaningful one.
