This elegant chess table has a base made from one inch thick plywood. The white squares are made from Sitka spruce while the dark squares are made from Iki wood (a tropical hard wood). All of the board squares measure three and three quarter inches square and are about one quarter inch thick. Glued to the plywood, they were then sanded flat. The outside frame is made from western red cedar with mitered corners.
The legs are made from western red cedar. Naturally curved and round, they are married to a square block of Sitka spruce I call a coupler block. Each side of this block is carved out to accept one curved, round leg. The coupler block holds each of the four legs rigid and is fastened to the underside of the table top. This is a classic design from Unique’D Furniture. All pieces are then coated with a clear, glossy, scratch resistant finish.
The chess pieces are antiques, imported from the Netherlands and carved from light and dark hardwoods in the 1970’s. The king stands at an impressive seven inches tall and has a diameter of two inches.
This beautifully finished, one of a kind chess table will be the focal point of any room. If you’re not in the mood to play, then remove the chess pieces and it doubles as an intimate dinner table for two. This incredible piece of art was handcrafted by Unique’D Furniture in Haida Gwaii, BC
